Butterfly Haven

I was making butterfly children from paper dolls and butterflies for a junk journal I’ve been working on and got distracted by one particular little girl who I thought looked adorable sitting on a toadstool. I decided she needed her own project. Enjoy!

  • Tim Holtz vignette box TH93279 ( I used the 3 3/8″ x 4 3/4″ size)
  • TH mini hardware TH94123
  • TH vignette base TH93709
  • TH linen tape TH94140
  • TH velvet trim TH94114
  • TH floral transparent layers TH94326
  • TH paper doll, butterflies and toadstools (I am not sure what sets each came from as I just keep them all together)
  • TH paper stash- Abandoned TH94022
  • TH tiny lights Halloween TH94157 (purple set)
  • Distress Paint and distress crayons (optional)
  • Sticks and moss
  • Distress Ink -Vintage Photo (opt.)

First, I glued a piece of paper from the Abandoned paper stash to the back of the box. I also painted the inside edge of the box with Prize Ribbon distress paint (optional). I drilled a hole in the bottom rear of the box to thread the tiny lights through and glued the battery pack to the back of the box. I shaped/glued the light strands just around the inside edge of the box.

Then I grabbed some sticks from my yard and trimmed them to fit on the sides of the box, hiding the lights. I added moss to fill in spaces and add extra coverage.

I chose some butterflies to add into the box, first inking the edges with vintage photo distress ink (opt.). I glued one of the butterflies to a small wood block I had painted black to make it look like it was flying. the other butterflies were glued to the twigs.

I colored the paper doll using distress crayons and a water brush. I glued on her wings and glued her to a toadstool. I glued her and a couple of extra toadstools to one of the transparent layers, then glued this to the front of the box. Note: I took this picture when I was still moving things around- I ended up putting these butterflies on the inside.

To decorate the outside of the box, I first wrapped it in linen tape , then two layers of black trim tape.

I glued the box to a vignette base and added a knob from the mini hardware set to the top of the box. Once it was dry I wrapped wire around the knob and glued on another butterfly. I then wrapped it with a piece of velvet ribbon, tied in a bow. I glued a few more butterflies to the outside of the box.

With that my make was complete. Here are a few more pics showing it lit up as well as some details.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week! -Lisa
