The Scarecrow

Despite the 100+ degree temperatures around here, I am ready for fall. Dreaming of cooler nights, heading to the pumpkin patch and wearing sweaters again. I fell in love with this scarecrow stamp by Tim Holtz for Stampers anonymous and felt it would be perfect for a little reverse painting.

Products used:

  • The Scarecrow (CMS451)
  • Vault series Halloween 2021 (665563)
  • Design Tape (TH94259)
  • Distress Mica flakes- Midnight
  • Ranger Archival Ink- Jet Black
  • Ranger Distress Paint- Black Soot, Rustic Wilderness, Peeled Paint, Prize Ribbon, Speckled Egg, Candied Apple, Ground Espresso, Picket Fence and Carved Pumpkin
  • Ranger Distress Ink- Scattered Straw, Gathered Twigs, Squeezed Lemonade
  • Ranger Distress Oxide- Villainous Potion, Rusty Hinge, Stormy Sky

Instructions:

First I cut a piece of acrylic to 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ and used washi tape to attach it to the non stick sheet from my travel glass platform. I then stamped the scarecrow and two stalks of corn using the jet black archival ink.

/

Once dry, I flipped the image over and reattached it to my non stick sheet. Then I painted the image using distress paints. Optional step- Once the original paint is dry, I like to paint over the image using black soot paint. This fills in any small gaps in the color and makes it more “solid”

For his face I mixed ground espresso, picket fence and carved pumpkin distress paints

While the paint dried (be patient, it can take a little longer on the acrylic), I worked on my background. I stamped the moon and the two opposite cornstalks on a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ piece of ivory card stock. I then colored them using ink and a water brush.

I then used blending brushes to ink the rest of the background

Once the scarecrow piece was dry, I ran black foam tape all around the edge of the image, making sure the edges butted right up to each other to prevent mica leakage.

I made a small tag with “Happy Fall” stamped in archival and distressed the edges with Gathered Twigs distress ink. This was attached on the background panel, overlapping the moon.

I placed a small pile of mica flakes in the center of the background panel, then attached the scarecrow panel on top. I covered the edges with design tape, covering the foam tape and folding the excess to the back.

As a final touch I cut the small raven twice from the vault series and lightly brushed some stormy sky distress oxide over the top of one of them. I stacked the colored raven on top of the non colored one and attached it to the lower right of the frame (I doubled the raven just to give it a little extra depth).

I then mounted the entire shaker unit to a black card base.

With a little shake to show the mica =)

With that my card was complete. I hope you like it and give it a try. Have a great week!
